We have several rider instruction programs at IB. We teach students young and young at heart.. We get asked many questions about learning to ride and handle horses, so I will attempt to answer a few of them here.

Q: How young do you take students or Am I too old to learn to ride?

A: Rose and I take students as young as 5. We haven't found anyone that is too old to ride yet. In our programs we do require all students to groom and at least help saddle the horses. They also halter and lead them. We have horses that are well mannered, patient, and forgiving that can be handled by anyone. We certainly help all students that need it and watch over them carefully but we also believe to do it for them is cheating them. We have 5 year olds that can pick up the horses hooves and clean them unassisted, then stand on a step to curry and brush the horse. These are the adults of the future that will accomplish whatever they set their minds to.

A. How often do people take lessons?

A. We teach three days per week and infrequent/occasional weekends. Most people take one lesson a week though some take three. Some people come for weekend sessions or even week long clinics as our schedule permits. Some of our competitive riders join us at shows for coaching style lessons. We try to provide what each person needs.

  Q. Do you have private or group lessons?

A. We have both private and group lessons. After work and school is a very busy time so all private lessons are before 3:00 pm. Our groups are small, from 2 - 6 people. Since most people are not planning to ride horses alone learning in a group setting is a good idea so the rider can be prepared on how to control the horse around others. Most people enjoy the social aspect of riding lessons in a group as well.

Q. What do you require from your students?

A. All students must wear long jeans and boots. All students under 18 and anyone jumping must wear a helmet. All students and visitors must sign a liability release and observe our barn rules which includes not bringing pets.

Q. Do I have to have a horse to take lessons?

A. No, we have an exceptional group of school horses. We highly recommend taking lessons before you even consider buying a horse. We love to help people buy their first horses, in addition to our many other services. We do give lessons to people on their own horses too.

You can email with questions of your own. IBStables@aol.com

Q. What style of riding do you teach? Do you ride English or Western?

A. We teach horse communication and it doesn't matter what saddle you ride in or even if you use a saddle. We do ride all seats and teach them as well. We teach Western, Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat, Endurance, speed events, Showmanship, and even Bareback.

Q. How many lessons do I have to take to learn to ride?

A. We don't know. We are all still learning but you can take as many or as few as you like. Some times it just depends on how far you want to go or how much you want to learn. We do schedule our lessons for a month at a time and they are payable for the month in advance.
